What makes the flute such an amazing instrument to learn?

The flute is one of the oldest instruments in human history! It’s a gorgeous instrument that is utilised across so many cultures with rich musical traditions. The flute you can study on at YMC, the Boehm flute, is like an orchestral chameleon! As you develop your sound, you’ll be able to imitate other instruments and even play the flute like a percussive instrument.

What kind of things will you get to do in a flute lesson?

Flute lessons are a safe space to be creative and silly, so I strongly encourage my students to incorporate singing, body percussion, and whimsical stories into their learning process. I always check in with my students to make sure we’re up to date with their goals and schedule, adjusting lesson plans to keep their progress on track with their goals. To equip pupils with the tools to discover and unleash their creative voice, I make sure we cover scales, various practice methods, time management, and duets in our lessons.

Why learn the flute?

Did you know that the stethoscope was invented by a doctor and flautist/flute maker? Your adventure with the flute might bring you adventures, ideas, and pathways that you could never foresee!

The flute is a versatile instrument across musical genres. Playing this instrument will give you the superpower to make a sound by blowing across anything that vaguely resembles an emboucher hole (i.e. straw, any bottle, the end of the flute, pvc pipe, etc.)

If you’re interested in playing a variety of wind instruments, the neutral emboucher of the flute makes it easier to switch between the various embouchers of the wind family, not to mention the lungs of steel you develop as a flautist!

Where can you get hold of a flute?

Just Flutes, All Flutes Plus, London Music Co., Woodwind London, Musical Instrument Hire Co, Dawkes Music, Howarth of London

How long are flute lessons?

30 or 60 minutes

What happens if I need to miss my flute lesson?

Email the me, flute teacher, and YMC as early as possible. Make-up lessons are not available through YMC.

How much practice do I need to do between lessons?

It depends on which grade the pupil is working towards and how quickly they would like to progress. To start, I recommend at least 30 minutes per day for at least 5 days a week, totalling to a minimum of 2.5 hours per week. Life can get incredibly busy, so if less time is available, aim for shorter but consistent and focused practice sessions over one-off large chunks of practice. Keeping a practice journal will help you use your time more efficiently and keep track of lesson assignments and progress.
